KOLONIA, Pohnpei (U.S. Embassy) — College of Micronesia-FSM in partnership with the U.S. Embassy inaugurated a new program on April 3, designed to strengthen the capacity of the civil sector to create change. A $26,350 grant from the U.S. State Department funded the college’s effort to work in collaboration with local non-governmental organizations to design a course for NGO practitioners.

The goal of the course is to provide staff, volunteers, and board members with the opportunity to learn more about the management and operation of NGOs.
The course covers the role of NGOs in civil society, the responsibility of the NGO board, public and political advocacy, program development and evaluation, fundraising, and volunteer management.
The first class was held April 3.

When participants finish the class, they will receive a certificate of completion in NGO management.
In fall 2013, the college will roll out a new required one-credit “Introduction to NGOs” class for all social science and health majors. The class will provide students with a better understanding of how NGOs can assist in their fields of endeavors and possibly expand the student’s career options.
